Pen pal relationships help to bridge the gap between prison inmates and the wider community by establishing an open channel of communication where prisoners are reminded that they are not alone and that society has not given up on them. Rather than keeping the focus on what these inmates “are in for,” prisoner pen pal relationships serve as a beacon of hope and a source of companionship that allow inmates to interact with the outside world, envision their future selves and imagine the types of lives they can lead upon being released.
